Sugar Sugar

Confectioners' sugar being sifted over a slice of Italian fruit cake

In my self-portrait of falling powdered sugar I froze the action with a combination of fast exposure and off-camera flash, triggered remotely, which provided just enough light while eliminating any distracting background (me!).

Learning to use an off-camera flash is a way to improve your food photography by leaps and bounds. With only a modest investment in a speedlight, some simple related gear, and some know-how, it’s not difficult to create special effects or great natural-looking results regardless of your actual (ambient) light. The Strobist blog is a great place to discover how.
