How do you write stories about food?

Your Ideas Matter sign displayed on a brick wall.

The many different subjects related to food include recipes, restaurant reviews, health and nutrition, history, cooking techniques, education, equipment, ingredients, business, agriculture, kitchen design, products, marketing, environmental issues, travel, cooking for pets, and much more.

The kind of story you write will depend on the subject, the purpose of the story, and whether you plan or hope to have it published. If you will be posting your story on your own blog or social media, it can help to observe what’s trending or popular. To submit to a publication, look for editorial guidelines regarding subject, length, and when and how to submit your work.

If you are new to food writing, it can be helpful to begin with a memoir. Remember that food writing is about more than food – it should be compelling and evoke emotion. Don’t just describe the food, tell a story and make it a good one. Follow the food sections of major newspapers to observe the ways in which newspapers, which have very limited space, must condense both articles and recipes so that they are as succinct as possible.
